Charcoal was burnt in the Logar valley in the 19th century. It was used by the locals in foundries, but was also driven elsewhere, especially to Železna Kapla (Bad Eisenkappel). Charcoal burning changed the image of the Logar valley, as a lot of trees were felled in the natural beech forests.
In memory of those times, a charcoal burners’ cottage was erected along the Logar Valley Trail, above the Dom Planincev mountain hut. Every year the charcoal burner assembles a charcoal pile next to the hut from beech logs, covers it with spruce branches and earth, lights a fire inside and burns charcoal by carefully regulating the air flow.
